Application: Abilities
Evangeline is an artificial immortal whose nature imitates that of the original non-human vampire species of antiquity, and one of the most powerful mages in her setting’s history. Despite vague statements in UQ Holder that she has lost a great deal of her power, she remains a match for some of the most powerful mages alive. Originally at least her immortality is of a highly perfect form such that bearers can expect to reform even if their whole body is disintegrated, their soul erased, or they should be exposed to a cataclysm on the scale of the entire earth being destroyed; successfully defeating her in combat can’t be achieved by destructive methods and requires that she be entombed and sealed with magic or attacks that inhibit mental functioning, and even these solutions are difficult to make permanent.
Though she leans towards the role of rear-line caster seeking to finish a battle in a single high-level spell when she has the necessary cover she is well aware that opportunities for that kind of decisive attack are rare and she is equally proficient in close combat. Aside from the advantages of her immortality she’s protected by a powerful magical barrier that absorbs damage and offers protection from other forms of attack like hostile teleportation as well. She has greatly superhuman strength and speed and has preternaturally skill in combat to the point where she could anticipate and outmaneuver Setsuna, a powerful half-demon ki-user and experienced monster hunter, using only enough magic to give her the strength of an adult human. She’s highly mobile, being capable of unassisted flight, anime flash-stepping nonsense, and teleportation via shadow.
She uses a wide variety of combat magic, specializing in the negative elements of cold and darkness. She most often fights with simple ice magic that projects blades or spears or crushes or entombs the target with large masses of ice, though she’s capable of threatening mages who shrug off orbital artillery with her blades, so they aren’t to be discounted for their simple appearance. Her notable finisher is the cold spell Ending World, considered the most difficult and powerful of the orthodox spells of annihilation, an energy-draining spell said to be capable of defeating any defense and destroying any target caught within its zone of stasis. When she's not being showy she tends to just disintegrate people by waving at them.
Her truly unique spells are the Blade of Conviction, a phase conversion effect that causes whatever it intersects to sublimate into a gas; Endless White Ninth Heaven, an ice/lightning spell that creates a large storm the lightning strikes of which invert and freeze magical barriers, sealing enemies inside their own defenses; and Magia Erebea, the true dark magic she distilled from the Lifemaker’s curse. Magia Erebea allows the user to absorb a completed spell into their soul, granting various power-ups and allowing spells to be stored for a long time for later use, and can be used as a basis for more complex enhancement techniques. Evangeline’s ‘armament’ of this type is Queen of Ice, which allows her to invoke all but the most powerful ice spells without any casting or recovery time, attacking continuously at the speed of thought. The most powerful use of this magic, though, is to absorb an opponent’s attack, nullifying it and gaining the power for one’s own use, but in Negima at least this required the use of a magical circle and Evangeline considered it too impractical to depend on in a pitched combat.
Evangeline has quite a few other abilities; she’s a skilled magical artisan who creates potions, golems, magical swords, and the like and builds large castles that she seals in alternate-dimensional glasses called diorama spheres. In UQ Holder she also maintains a phantasmagoric prison dimension she can banish other characters to. She’s capable of creating autonomous shades of herself in other characters’ minds out of their memories of her, and in the case of the shade created from the scroll of Magia Erebea it was capable of taking a physical form and had considerable magical power of its own. She's capable of using illusion magic to create temporary changes to reality, and is said to be highly advanced in this area, though she never seems to do anything with it besides change her appearance. She can also create unbreakable contracts that force the signer to carry through on a promised course of action.
Though it's rather quaint by comparison to her other abilities at one point she was famous a as a puppeteering mage, commanding forces of golems and guiding puppets (or entangling opponents) on vast webs of enchanted string. As a result she claims to have an expert eye for automatons, claiming she can tell artificial persons apart from humans no matter their sentience or the construction of their bodies simply by how they move.
She also displays some traditional vampire powers such as increasing her power and creating thralls by drinking blood, controlling her own blood, and discorporating her body into batlike shadows, though this also gets very little play outside the first few arcs of Negima - she's defined as a person by her immortality and as a combatant by her magic, with her vampirism remaining largely an irrelevant cosmetic styling. She does, however, claim that as an undead she's incapable of using healing magic, and disdains garlic.
